506070 buy and sell decorative furniture and arts from the fifties, sixties and seventies.
Their existing website was completely static HTML. The website lists over 100 items for sale. Each has a thumbnail, a detailed image and a description, along with other data (such as a stock code, the manufacturer, colour, condition and price).
As 506070 grew maintaining and updating the site became a difficult, time-consuming task. Newer items needed to appear at the start – which potentially meant updating every index page. A photo of each product needed to be cropped and scaled and then uploaded via FTP.
I designed and implemented a custom Content Management System (CMS), using PHP and MySQL. I took the existing tables-based HTML 4 and converted it to clean, easily modifiable XHTML and CSS, separating the content from the style.
I then developed a database and an administration interface which presents 506070 with a form – all 506070 need to do is enter the information for a new product, select a photo, and the CMS takes care of the rest – all from within a secure, password protected web page.
New items are by default displayed first; while still allowing the order of items to be set manually.
My custom CMS didn’t take long to develop and can be used by those with very little computer experience.
Here’s a testimonial from Mike, the General Manager of 506070:
Hi David,
It’s fantastic, everything I would had hoped for, I really appreciate what you have done. I’m looking forward to using it for real.
Kind regards
Mike
Getting feedback like that gives me a real sense of accomplishment that I try to achieve on every job!
